When most people think of Idaho, they usually think of flat farmland and potatoes. They don’t usually think of towering mountains with powdery ski resorts and amazing terrain parks, but little do they know that Idaho is one of the best places to go skiing and snowboarding in the country.

If you have ever visited the mountains of Idaho in the winter then you know exactly how much snow they get (which is a lot). Far in the northern panhandle of the Selkirk Mountains is home to a great ski resort with some of the best views of Lake Pend Oreille that you will ever see. Further south in west central Idaho, the Payette National Forest is has another absolute gem of a ski resort and ski town that once you visit you will be making plans to return before you even leave. Continue on to south-central Idaho’s Smokey Mountain Range and you’re in for more amazing views and deep snow at the oldest destination ski resort in the United States. Best Ski Resorts In Idaho With Terrain Parks

Schweitzer Ski Resort

Schweitzer is a wonderful family-friendly ski resort located in the Selkirk Mountains of northern Idaho’s panhandle. It offers amazing views of the Lake Pend Oreille, the town of Sandpoint, and Canada off in the distance. There are 2,900 ski-able acres thanks to its two large bowls which offer all kinds of terrain such as tree runs, wide-open areas, steep cliffs, and best of all epic terrain parks.

Schweitzer’s mountain village is also very cool and offers lots of options to eat, drink, and shop. So even if you visit the mountain and don’t ride, there are plenty of things to keep you busy for the day.

Schweitzer Ski Resort’s Terrain Parks

Easily accessed off the Basin Express, The Stomping Grounds Terrain Park is Schweitzer’s main park and it has a variety of medium and large jumps and jibs. The 2022/23 season will see more medium-sized features incorporated to accommodate a broader range of riders, and to allow more opportunity for park goers to work their way up to the big obstacles. This terrain park is extremely rad and you will want to lap it all day!

Note: For 2022-23, riders will no longer require a park pass to enter the Stomping Grounds; but are still expect you to be Park Smart and to follow the Smart Style code of conduct and the Skier Responsibility Code.

Due to a high demand in recent seasons for rider-x and flow style features, Schweitzer is utilizing space in Southside Progression Park to offer that. Their plan is to provide an area where there are no limitations to how the features can be used, and where mom and dad can have just as much fun as the kids.

The Terrain Garden for this season is located near the bottom of Midway on the skier’s right just above the main Stomping Grounds exit. This location has small jump and jib features. It can be accessed off of Midway, or from South Park and the Stomping Grounds by taking the upper exit above the bottom shack.

Musical Chairs has mounds and roll-on boxes that are perfect for beginners. This area offer a space to learn edge and speed control, as well as have fun just going over some rollers. Be sure to be respectful of the little ones in this area, it is built with them in mind.

Sun Valley Ski Resort

Sun Valley Ski Resort is on the bucket list of many snowboarders and skiers. There is some interesting history with Sun Valley as this was literally the nation’s first destination ski resort, with the world’s first chairlifts, where the very idea of the American ski vacation was born. With two mountains (Bald and Dollar) which are both steep and powdery but also offer plenty of entry level runs, it’s the perfect ski resort for you next winter vacation. The terrain parks at Sun Valley are extremely good thanks to their terrain park manager Nate Sheehan who has the skills and vision to create amazing terrain courses.

Dollar Mountain Terrain Parks

Sidecar Park is an extra small park containing mini jumps and ride-on boxes located on lower poverty flats. Prospector is another learning park with extra small-sized berms and rollers. Mineshaft is also a small learning park and a family zone with mini-moguls, rollers, berms, mini pipe, and more. All of these beginner zones are located just off the Quarter Dollar lift.

Train Yard Park offers entry-level tabletops, boxes, and rails. Lombard Street is a small “family cross” course with berms and rollers. Both of these terrain parks can be accessed via Full or Half Dollar lifts.

Upper Trestles is as medium park that is usually set up as a flow trail with jumps, berms, and some jib features. It’s located in Old Bowl, off the Full Dollar lift. Lower Trestles is also a medium transition park with various transitional features such as bowls, hips, quarter pipes, jib features, and more. Lower Trestles is located just below Upper Trestles and can be accessed from Full or Half Dollar lifts.

Namedropper Terrain Park is set up for intermediate riders with a jump line, boxes, rails, and other fun obstacles. This park is located off the Half Dollar lift.

Motherload Terrain Park is where the big boys play! This park has some serious jumps that exceed fifty-feet, professional style rails, boxes, gaps, hits, and walls. If you’re a competent rider then this is where you will be all day long. Motherload can be reached via the Half Dollar lift.

Bald Mountain Terrain Parks

Broadway Mini Cross is a small family cross course with rollers and berms. You can find it at the top of Broadway, access is via Seattle Ridge lift. Saddle Up is another beginner park with small tabletops, hips, rollers, and jibs.

Showtime is a beginner to intermediate terrain park made up of medium-sized park with jump line, rollers, jibs, and more.

Brundage Ski Resort

Brundage Ski Resort is located in the high mountains of central Idaho and has a reputation of having “the best snow in the state”. There are 1,920 acres of lift-accessible runs and two terrain parks.
