South Carolina has a mix of DIY, pay-to-use, and free public skateparks however the latter is unfortunately few and far between. Unlike most states, South Carolina has very few public skateparks and in fact, there are no public skateparks at all in ‘upstate’ apart from a DIY spot which even that facility may be jeopardized due to housing development.
Although the state might be a little behind the eight ball compared to its neighbor North Carolina, they are making some progress for their residents and local communities. For instance, Charleston recently acquired an impressive 32,000 square foot state-of-the-art skateboarding facility.
In addition, the owners of a pay-to-use indoor skatepark in Greensville are working hard alongside local skateboarders and with Tony Hawk‘s foundation ‘The Skatepark Project’ to secure funds for a free outdoor facility there.
It looks like things are continuing to improve so be sure not to count South Carolina out of the skatepark game yet because this state is just getting started! Take a look at what they have achieved so far.
Best Skateparks In South Carolina
SK8 Charleston Skatepark
SK8 Charleston is a 32,000 square foot skatepark that was built by Team Pain. The street course is 320 feet long and has granite ledges, brick China bank, rails, flat bars, bump to bar, stairs, manual pads, bowled corner, volcano, and quarter pipes with extensions. The snake run consists of hips, moguls, pool coping, extensions, and a love seat.
If you like to skate bowls there are two of them; one is an eleven and a half foot professional style with over vert and a six foot shallow end, the second is an intermediate seven foot bowl with a five foot shallow end.
No matter what type of skateboarding you like to do, whether it’s transition, street, or just cruising, SK8 Charleston has you covered.
The onsite skate shop is awesome and has everything you need for skateboarding from new gear to safety equipment, parts, and even rentals. But wait there is more! Food and drinks can be purchased from the shop and the building has a large viewing deck to watch skateboarders do their thing.
This skatepark is not free and will set you back $3 for the day or $40 will get you an annual pass. Not too bad I suppose.

Poe Mill DIY Skatepark
Poe Mill was once a thriving textile mill from 1896 – 1977 however in 2003 it burnt down and local skateboarders began building makeshift ramps on the concrete remains. It has been like this ever since up until the Greenville Redevelopment Authority purchased the land in 2010 and sparked the conversation for a professional skatepark to be built.
This grabbed the attention of two well known skateboarding corporations that included Street League and The Skatepark Foundation. However, the hype of building a new skatepark was short lived when estimates of around $2.5 million were thrown around and the Greenville County Recreation Department said they simply didn’t have the money to fund the project.
Unfortunately for now POE Mill remains as a DIY skatepark. The DIY features variety of obstacles including quarter pipes, banks, ledges, rails, and more.
