One of those popular outdoor activities is skateboarding due to Vancouver Island’s awesome selection of skateparks. Having such great skateparks has also resulted in a thriving skate community here.

There have been several new skateboarding facilities built in the last few years and there are also some older ones that are still held in high regard by local skateboarders. Whether you’re looking for a pool, flow bowl, or street course there is a skatepark on Vancouver Island that will surely satisfy your needs.

Harewood Skatepark

Harewood Skatepark was completed in 2020 and is one of the best skateparks on Vancouver Island. Split into three-sections of different terrain, this skatepark will appeal to all types of riders.

Transition skateboarders will enjoy a peanut-shaped pool bowl that consists of a deep end, shallow end, hip, and some beautiful pool coping and tile. The street course starts off with a quarter pipe followed by a down rail, three stair, and long bank then continues into a hubba ledge, five-stair, down rail, and another hubba ledge on the opposite side. For the third and final area of this skatepark riders are blessed with an awesome street plaza. Two identical manual pad ledges with flat bars are the center piece of this plaza and are designed for both regular and goofy riders to be able to hit them from either direction. There are also bank ramps, ledges, three-block gap, bank to ledges, flat bar, and a pole jam.

This skatepark also features Coast Salish artwork integrated as part of the overall design. Snuneymuxw artist Joel Good, known for his carving and graphic illustration, teamed up with Bracken Hanuse Corlett, an interdisciplinary artist hailing from the Wuikinuxv and Klahoose Nations, to create artwork for the park. Their work was painted onto the concrete surface of the new park as soon as the freshly poured concrete was cured.

Topaz Skatepark

Victoria’s newest edition is the 32,000 square foot Topaz Skatepark. Built and designed by no other then New Line Skateparks it features a mix of both street and transition terrain.

There is a large bowl that consists of steel coping, pool coping, and pool tile, as well as a mini bowl. The street plaza is also large and very impressive. It consists of down ledges, flat ledges, stairs, lots of different types of rails, manual pads, volcano, pump bumps and rollers, curbs, bank ramps, and quarter pipes.

There are lots of different line opportunities, the concrete is silky smooth, and the vibes are great. No matter what your skill level is, this is a must skate if you’re in Victoria.

Cumberland Skatepark

Cumberland Skatepark measures in at 5,500 square feet and opened in 2017. No matter if you’re a street or transition skateboarder you will enjoy this cool little skatepark as it caters to all. There is a flow bowl with a radial pocket, hips, and steel coping, as well as a mini ramp, The street course features a variety of obstacles such as a signature “Cumberland” flat bar, manual pad, flat ledges, A-frame with a ledge, hubba ledges, bump to ledges, down rails, bump to rails, stair set, and quarter pipes.

Vic West Skatepark

Vic West Skatepark was designed and built in two phases, the first in 2002 and the second in 2017. New Line Skateparks were the company tasked with bringing this awesome facility to life for the local skateboarding community in Victoria.

It features an enclosed bowl with an extension, volcano, spine, steel coping, pool coping, and noping. There is also an open-style flow bowl with an extension, central pyramid, and a chunk of slappy curb. As for the rest of this skatepark you will find hubba ledges, flat ledges, handrails, flat rails, pyramids, manual pads, euro gaps, banks, hips, and quarter pipes.

No matter what type of rider you are there is something that will appeal to you. Whether you just want to cruise around in a bowl, practice your manuals and ledge tricks, or do some serious ripping, Vic West is suitable for all skateboarding abilities.

Chemainus Skatepark

Chemainus Skatepark, Vancouver Island

Chemainus Skatepark was designed and built by Newline Skateparks. Opening in 2015 it features a variety of street and transition terrain. A snake-run style trasition section runs through the entire length of the facility and features a radial pocket, hips, banks, humps, and extensions. The street elements include a six-stair with a handrail and hubba ledge, A-frame with a ledge and rail, flat bars, and flat ledges. This is a very cool skatepark with a unique design that offers good flow for all types of riders to enjoy.
