To be one of the best skateboarders in America is quite a title but how do you really classify someone as the best? Well in this case it is based off overall skill in both street and park skating, backed up with first place at the Dew Tour in Des Moines and solidifying a place on the USA Olympic skateboarding team. That’s right, Zion Wright proves he’s one of the best skateboarders right now.
Wright is a twenty-two year old Florida native who hails from the small town of Jupiter where he first stepped on a skateboard at the age of four. He moved to Los Angeles at age sixteen to pursue a career in skateboarding which was a crucial part of his success. In 2017 Real Skateboards turned him pro and from that point on he has been unstoppable.
It was obvious that Wright’s skateboarding skills were special and didn’t stop with just street skating. Skateboarders refer to him as an “ATV” all terrain vehicle because he can literally skate anything from big street rails to vert bowls. Now, a lot of skaters can do both street and park skating but the level at which Wright does it is a step above the rest.
Zion Wright Claims His Spot In The Olympics
Wright was added to the USA Skateboarding Team in 2019 which allowed him to set his sights on competing in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, now the 2021 Olympics.
Coming into the Dew Tour event in Des Moines he was ranked sixteenth and needed to win the contest if he had any chance on making the Olympic skateboarding team. Wright was on a mission from the first day qualifying first in the open park qualifier with a 78.40 run.
The semi finals were no exception and he kept wowing the crowd with massive frontside airs, heelflip indy grabs, and 540’s. Wright has the ability to pull off all the big tricks and tends to add a little street skating flare in his runs. He qualified second in the semi’s with a score of 84.53 behind fourteen year old ripper Gavin Bottger’s 86.72.

The finals saw some mind blowing skateboarding but Wright’s aura was infectious, spreading complete stoke with the other competitors and the crowd showed he is more than just a skateboarder. He is truly a genuine person that loves life and is a great role model for the sport.
Wright stepped it up in his final run by adding a 540 double grab over the island where he had previously been doing only a 360 (still an extremely hard trick). By adding the 540 to the rest of the tricks in his run which included a heelflip indy, backside 360 indy, frontside indy, frontside ally-oop, and a front blunt, saw him take away a score of 91.04 and the win.

Talk about leaving it to the last minute! The win has solidified Wright a place on the Olympic skateboarding team and we will see him representing the United States in Tokyo in 2021. Congratulations Zion Wright, you are a true inspiration and an all-round great guy. Good luck in the Olympics, we will be watching.
