Best Skateparks In London

Southbank Undercroft Skatepark

Southbank Undercroft is known as the birthplace of British skateboarding and has been the go to spot for London street skateboarders since the seventies. The underpass was originally designed as a walkway for pedestrians but the thoroughfare began to attract skaters due to its skatepark-like design.

Because of the skatepark’s age and years of use, it was beginning to show signs of serious disrepair so in 2019 the space was refurbished and brought back to its original glory.

To retain the character of the skatepark, the architecture studio responsible for the refurbishment referred to numerous archive drawings and photography of the space in order to keep original design features as much as possible.

The plaza-style skatepark has shrunk a little from its former glory days and the remaining area features a variety of paved banks, a concrete jersey barrier, timber sleepers used for ledges, concrete ledges, and a seven-stair set. Adjacent to the stair set is an infamous gap in the form of another block leading into a massive drop for those who are brave enough. The lower section of the plaza is surrounded by the banks with a set of railings around the edge as well.

If you are looking to skate in London, this is the most iconic skate spot there is! There are no opening or closing hours and the space is undercover which means any time is a good time to go.
