Kansas City, Missouri, probably doesn’t come to the front of your mind when you think of skateparks or skateboarding in general, but this place has a thriving skate scene with some pretty awesome skateparks to shred.

Although Kansas City hasn’t seen the construction of any new skateparks lately, that hasn’t stopped the local skateboarding community from skating. The locals in this city have taken matters into their own hands by building one of the coolest DIY skateparks around!

And here is a fun fact for those of you into skate culture; professional skateboarder Sean Malto actually grew up not too far from Kansas City over in neighboring Lansing, Kansas! If you don’t know who he is, you better look him up because he is one of the best skateboarders of all time.

Best Skateparks In Kansas City

Penn Valley Skatepark

Penn Valley Skatepark which was originally built in 2006, measured in at 10,000 square feet and consisted of a bowl with tile, pool coping and steel coping, an eight-stair with a handrail and down ledges, four-stair and handrail, euro gap, and a concrete picnic table.

However, in 2012 a second phase was built adding an extra 7,000 square feet to this facility. This recent addition was designed and constructed by California Skateparks with support from the Rob Dyrdek Foundation.

The park now also features hubba ledges, handrails, out rails, flat bars, flat ledge, stairs, bank-to-bench, bank ramps, manual pad, A-frame rail, and quarter pipes.

PENN VALLEY SKATEPARK

Harrison Street DIY Skatepark

Harrison Street DIY Skatepark is Kansas City’s first legally-approved DIY spot. Support and funding for the project has been provided by Rocket Grants, Charlotte Street Foundation, Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas, Andy Warhol Foundation, The Skatepark Project, Pabst Blue Ribbon, and local community members.

There are a variety of obstacles here including quarter pipes, bowls, walls, bank ramps, ledges, pump bumps, hips, and lots of pool coping.

The local skateboarding community are constantly building and improving this skatepark which helps to keep things exciting. This is a very cool park to skate if you are in the area or just love skating DIY spots.

Independence Skatepark

Independence Skatepark is a fifteen minute drive from downtown Kansas City. It is 10,000 square feet and features a six to nine-foot bowl with two extensions, two hubba ledges, eight-stair with a handrail, two out ledges, two down ledges, three-stair with a rail, concrete picnic table, curved ledge, flat ledge, flat bar, and a bank ramp. The facility was designed by SITE Design Group.

Roeland Park Skatepark

Roeland Park Skatepark is a short ten minute drive from downtown Kansas City on the Kansas state side of Kansas City.

This facility consists of a variety of street-style elements such as flat ledges, out ledge, curved ledges, hubba ledges, blocks, manual pads, several stair sets, handrails, pyramid with a ledge, and bank ramps.

There is absolutely no transition here so it is best suited to skateboarders who like to skate street obstacles.

Pleasant Valley Skatepark

Pleasant Valley Skatepark opened over 20 years ago but it has stood the test of time and is still a local favorite here in Kansas City. There are six hubba ledges, two handrails, flat ledges, and a huge open flow bowl area with spines, hips, and a pyramid. This is definitely a historic skatepark so if you happen to find yourself nearby it’s worth checking out.
