Ten years ago, Hurricane Sandy destroyed Highlands Skatepark in New Jersey and the local community has been trying to get a new skateboarding facility built ever since. It turns out they were successful because just last month on July 28th, 2023 their new skatepark was finally completed and opened to the public. It goes to show that with determination, perseverance, and patience a dream can become a reality.

The city of Highlands hired one of the countries top skatepark designers and builders from California (Spohn Ranch) to bring their project to life. The cost of the new skatepark was around $600,000 and the local community couldn’t be happier to see the money allocated to this project.

The new Highlands Skatepark is designed to accommodate all riding abilities with both street and transition sections to choose from. There is a awesome little bowl with pool and steel coping, spine, hips, cradle pocket, and a roll over entry. Other transitional obstacles include numerous standard quarter pipes, a quarter pipe with an extension and window, and a panned “H” quarter pipe that pays homage to Highlands.

As for the street course you will find flat ledges, slappy ledge, manual pad, flat bar, flat out rail, brick bank, bank to slappy curb, and a volcano. This skatepark offers a decent amount of obstacles for its limited amount of space.

Whether you’re are just a beginner looking for a place to learn how to ride or an experienced rider, Highlands Skatepark is is waiting for you. It is located at Snug Harbor, at the intersection of Bay and Snug Harbor avenues, right at the bottom of the hill overlooking the Raritan Bay waterfront.

Always remember to use skatepark etiquette, pick up your trash, and respect the space. Happy shredding!
